Bikers Poker Run In Key West Held For Charity
Approximately 10,000 motorcycle riders from around the United States turned up in Key West, Florida, traversing the Florida Keys Overseas Highway to take part on the Key West Poker Run slated to conclude Sunday, Sept. 17. The Poker run will be raising funds for the Diabetes Research Institute and various Key West charities and educational scholarships.
The organizations behind this gallant effort are Peterson's Harley-Davidson of Miami and the Key West Sunrise Rotary Club, which is celebrating its 34th anniversary this year.
At the start of the program, the bikers get hold of poker sheets where they register to ride, and then draw cards at the designated stops along the 150-mile stretch route. Participants who draw the 10 best poker hands gets the chance to compete for the grand prize of $5,000 dollars cash or they can opt to choose a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
A strip of lower Duval Street, the main thoroughfare in Key West, will be closed to traffic from 1 p.m. to 2 a.m. over the weekend, in light of the poker run. As such, bikers are free to park on the street to display their bikes. Music and food adds to the festivities, giving the event an open-air carnival flavor. A custom bike show will take place in lower Duval where trophies will be awarded in 20 categories.
